Crime has long since become an everyday word in Nigeria as well as off the shores of this nation. Long tales can be told about how corrupt Nigeria is (by the way, crime and corruption are like brothers, more like identical twins, they go hand in hand).But it would help to realize that Nigeria is facing as many challenges in the crime world as well as any other country. The difference I might add is that only recently has Nigeria decided to take the bull by the horn and deal with this very existing issue squarely. Crime can be described as a violation of a law in which harm is done to the public or a member of the public and can therefore result in serving term in jail or prison, and/or paying a fine as possible penalties. On the other hand, corruption is not much different. “ Corruption hurts the poor disproportionately by diverting funds intended for development, undermining a government's ability to provide basic services, feeding inequality and injustice, and discouraging foreign investment and aid". Kofi Annan, United Nations Secretary-General in his statement on the adoption by the General Assembly of the United Nations Convention against Corruption. Fortunately, the current government is heartily concerned about fighting crime and corruption in Nigeria and has put in place certain organizations to help fight these two leeching issues.
